Springer Nature is a global publisher of some of the world’s most influential journals in the fields of science, technology, medicine, humanities and social sciences.
The group had set a net zero target and had made good progress on reducing their emissions. They knew that driving down supply chain emissions would be a vital part of their net zero journey. A significant proportion of Scope 3 emissions related to their physical products (books and journals) and the associated logistics. There were already several initiatives and ideas to reduce emissions, however implementing these, and addressing multiple challenges they faced, required input and collaboration between multiple teams and business units.
The client sought our support to design and facilitate a workshop to identify and prioritise actions to reduce Scope 3 emissions in line with their net zero targets.
We worked with the client to design and facilitate a one-day workshop that brought together twenty colleagues from different functions and business units. This was designed to uncover different perspectives, identify potential solutions and begin to prioritise where to focus.
In advance of the workshop we developed a briefing to ensure that all attendees were on the same page about what Scope 3 emissions were, the importance to the business of tackling them, and what we were hoping to achieve in the workshop.
We co-developed and delivered presentations for the workshop itself including interactive breakout sessions and activities. This included brainstorming, prioritising and classifying potential solutions and next steps.
The outputs were used by the client to develop a pathway to reduce Scope 3 emissions in priority categories to support the achievement of its net zero goals.
