Climate Change and Human Rights

Alongside the growing urgency to respond to climate change, human rights is fast becoming a priority for businesses who are facing more scrutiny and demands from regulators, investors and civil society. The recent extreme weather, from the UK to Pakistan, is a powerful reminder that climate change will have increasingly devastating implications for people and societies.

As part of our commitment to deepening understanding of business-critical issues, Sancroft is delighted to host an evening of expert discussion to examine:

  • How the climate crisis, and the business response, is affecting workers and communities
  • Why businesses and investors need to take a proactive approach to tackle human rights
  • What businesses and investors need to do to respond

Our renowned speakers include Elise Groulx Diggs:

Elise practices international human rights law and international criminal law, with wide experience advising public and private sector clients. She advises corporations on human rights risks in their strategic projects and supply chains.  She advises corporations, law firms, organisations and international NGOs in the United States, Canada, France and the United Kingdom with a focus on the UNGPs, the OECD guidelines for Multinational, the Equator principles and the SDGs. Elise is also an advisor to Sancroft.

Phil Bloomer, Executive Director of Business & Human Rights Resource Centre:

Phil is responsible for leading the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre. The BHRRC seeks to empower human rights advocates and hold corporations accountable when addressing human rights concerns, compiling data on over 10,000 companies. The organisation works in three strategic priorities: labour rights in supply chains; just transition to net zero carbon and rights in technology. Simultaneously, Phil is involved in groups such as Climate Outreach and the European Citizen’s Initiative for a Living Wage. Prior this this, Phil was Director of Campaigns and Policy at Oxfam.

The discussion will be chaired by Lord Deben, Founder and Chairman of Sancroft:

The Rt Hon. John Gummer, Lord Deben served for sixteen years as a British minister in the governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major, as Employment Minister, Paymaster General in HM Treasury, Minister for London and Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, before moving in 1992 to the Department of the Environment.
