Built for Stability, Living with Disruption: Moving the UK Food System from Efficiency to Resilience

On 1 October 2026, Sancroft hosted an event which looked at how the UK food system can move from efficiency to resilience.

Our food system was optimised for a stable, predictable world, and disrupted supply chains, soaring prices, water scarcity and changing consumption patterns are now testing it.

We brought together leaders from across the food value chain with a panel including Professor Susan Jebb (University of Oxford), Professor Tim Lang (City St George’s, University of London), Lord Deben, Andrew Lawrence (Sadel Group), Sir Peter Kendall, Caroline Carson (Greencore) and Jeremy Mathieu (ITV).

We explored:

  • How climate, supply chain and health pressures connect across the food system
  • Where resilience is built: in operational decisions, trade-offs and the details of how businesses run
  • How farmers, producers, manufacturers and retailers can agree what needs to change
  • Opportunities for interactive discussion and networking with sustainability peers
