GameChange Solar, a global solar tracking company, sought to develop a sustainability strategy to support their continued growth. Up until this point they had been focusing on scaling the business to provide cost-efficient tracking and racking systems for solar array projects.
Increasing pressure from clients to respond to questions on their ESG approach trigged the need for a formalised strategy to monitor and improve the wider impact of the business on the environment and society in line with their customer needs.
The Sancroft team set out to develop a ESG strategy which met both the needs of the current business and the evolving needs of customers. This was to be launched to all stakeholders in an ESG report which Sancroft developed.
The project began by gaining a deep understanding of what sustainability factors mattered most to the client. This was done through interviewing internal stakeholders, analysing market requirements for ESG, identifying peer best-practice and examining the demands of regulation intended to direct capital flows into sustainable activities. We created a matrix to score relevant factors before engaging the client in a workshop to agree on the ESG topics which are the most significant for the client.
Sancroft then devised a roadmap for the client to follow over the duration of the strategy, including meaningful KPIs to track progress and attaching ownership of ESG areas to members of senior leadership. Once the strategy and roadmap had been developed, the Sancroft team worked closely with the client to create a set of external communication documents which can be used for various stakeholder groups, including an ESG report.
Through this project, the client gained a clear reporting line and governance structure for the implementation of the strategy – imperative to ensure continued progress on ESG issues in a fast-growing business. Sancroft continued to support the client with activities for the first year, including gathering baseline data for the agreed KPIs.
Following the delivery of the strategy, the client is continuing to have regular check-ins with the internal activity leads to maintain momentum. Sancroft is providing ongoing support as a trusted advisor throughout this period.
The external communications were well-received by senior leadership. They have already helped GameChange Solar answer ESG-related questions in sales contexts as they were able to demonstrate a considered, bespoke strategy and effectively communicate what they had already achieved.
