The Space industry is a sector brimming with innovative technologies primed to address humanity’s greatest challenges.
Our client, Seraphim, a growth investor in the Space industry wanted to better understand the perceptions of Space within the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) market as a driver of opportunities for a cleaner future. They also wanted to understand where they can add value to their fund’s portfolio companies in driving competitiveness around ESG and greater long-term profitability.
Sancroft first undertook rigorous analysis to identify the key risks and opportunities in the Space industry and gathered insights into how Seraphim was responding. We used globally recognised research and analysis to identify the material issues and the nuances and challenges particular to the Space industry. One such issue identified was around the use of technology. We examined how Space technologies could be used for both positive and negative impact, in many cases without the technology company’s knowledge. We developed ESG monitoring tool to identify this risk, and others, and provided guidance and best practice to manage and reduce the risks.
Risks were not the only driver for this project, Seraphim wanted to ensure positive contributions to ESG were being captured and understood. We integrated the UN’s SDG framework into the ESG monitoring tool, which will in turn inform investment decisions. In addition, we mapped the current portfolio companies to the SDG targets to provide valuable content for Seraphim to showcase the positive impact.
Building on the insights gathered and the tools created we developed and delivered an ESG in Space training programme for portfolio companies.
Sancroft’s work has allowed Seraphim Space to launch a new ESG investment monitoring tool. Using this tool will enhance its fund’s ESG credentials by ensuring all the existing and future portfolio company investments not only limit any negative impacts from their operations, but also support next-generation ESG-related processes to help the companies to reach net zero and address government targets.
The tool helps to identify gaps where Seraphim Space can assist portfolio companies in developing processes to reach their ESG objectives in their operations and throughout their value and supply chain.
