We’re delighted to announce that we’ve promoted Alex Miller to the role of Senior Consultant. Here, Alex, who joined us in January 2023, shares what makes him tick, what he hopes to achieve in his new role and what Sancroft clients can expect from working with him.
First things first Alex, why sustainability?
I started my career with a six-year stint in investment banking where I advised corporates on both M&A and equity fundraising transactions. Over this period, I saw the rise of ESG up the agendas of investors. This prompted me ask what more investors and corporates can do to help drive the transformation to a more sustainable world and what role can I play within this.
Subsequently I studied for Imperial College Business School’s postgraduate degree in Climate Change, Management and Finance – a great experience that gave me an informed sense of urgency about the risks posed by climate change, and, just as importantly, the critical role that the private sector plays in both mitigating those risks and advancing sustainability solutions.
Why did you choose to join Sancroft?
Sancroft sits neatly at the juncture of sustainability within the private sector. Our clients include corporates, financial institutions and asset managers and I was energised by the opportunity to pursue my goals in driving positive impact at scale. Although governments play a critical role in setting policy and the guardrails to which the private sector must adhere, I am a fundamental believer in capitalism and how the market can drive change.
What has been your biggest achievement in your career so far?
Identifying a subject and a company in Sancroft that truly energises me. For me, having the privilege of working on sustainability challenges and solutions for our clients is an achievement in itself.
I also feel that my skillset and knowledge that I brought from investment banking has expanded the already diverse capabilities that Sancroft provides, which is particularly important as the link between financial and sustainability impact grows.
What are you hoping to achieve in your new role?
Sancroft’s mission gives each and every employee, regardless of job title, the scope to help our clients tackle the most pressing sustainability challenges of our time and turn them into opportunities. I’m particularly excited to serve as Senior Consultant given its higher proximity to strategy and system change. Working closely with Sancroft’s Executive Committee, I want to build on the progress that we have made as a company and contribute both to our overall strategy and to the project teams that support our clients so well.
What can Sancroft clients expect from working with you?
Honest and pragmatic advice. Tailored solutions designed to deliver impact at scale. And an unwavering commitment to quality.
And finally, what do you get up to when you’re not advising our clients?
I love to challenge myself physically while doing my bit for others. Over recent years, this has involved swimming in the Serpentine in aid of Single Homeless Project, running the London Marathon for WaterAid, and trying but failing to grow facial hair for Movember (by far the hardest challenge!) If and when rest day calls, you’ll find me at a wine tasting or having a laugh playing Monopoly Deal with friends.
